The Piedmont Environmental Council launched Virginia's first Buy Fresh Buy Local campaign in 2006 with the goal of supporting local farmers, productive agricultural lands and rural economies by helping consumers easily find and purchase locally produced foods.

The Piedmont Environmental Council creates food guides and marketing materials, organizes food events, and helps to develop new market outlets for farmers by building networks of producers, business owners, community organizations and consumers that are dedicated to the local food movement.

Today the Piedmont Environmental Council is the regional coordinator of three Buy Fresh, Buy Local campaigns throughout the Piedmont region- the Northern Piedmont, the Charlottesville Area, and Loudoun County.

Local Buy Fresh, Buy Local campaigns are coordinated in partnership with FoodRoutes Network, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting local foods efforts across the country. If you’d like to learn more about starting a local Buy Fresh campaign please contact bfbl[at]pecva.org.
